Digital Painting

Digital Painting - Graphic Interior

Our next digital painting assignment was to create very graphic interior, specifically a kitchen. I really like how this graphic look turned out, and I'd like to try cleaning up and colouring an animation this way sometime soon.

Life Drawing

Life Drawing - Toronto Zoo

Last weekend we had our annual trip to the zoo. I didn't stay as long as usual and didn't get as many drawings as usual (a lot of the exhibits I spent time walking to had the animals shut away for the cold), but I think there's a definite improvement showing.

And a few gesture pages of meerkats and brown bears.

Storyboard

Layout - Western Storyboard

After having designed the western characters (final lineup pictured above) we took the script and made the final storyboards. Unfortuntely, due to time constraints mine ended up being done in about a day and a half, but I think they turned out alright regardless. See them after the break.

Digital Painting

Digital Painting - Photo Ink

Just a little update today. In learning about digital painting in Flash, we had to take a provided photo and trace it, then colour in Photoshop. It was a good first step into the program, because my last two animation assignments will be done in Flash.

3D Modelling

3D Modelling - Human Hand

Our first organic modelling assignment was to model a human hand using provided reference photos. Obviously this model wouldn't be used for a rig because it was modelled with bent fingers, but the assignment was more about being able to model accurately according to reference.

Storyboard

Storyboard - Cuddles McGish Leica

Here, in full, is our group's leica reel for the Cuddles McGish assignment. My section (previously posted) is Verse 9, about 2/3 of the way through, from when the Sergeant gets up to him tossing Cuddles on the ground.

Following up on the Japanese character designs, here's another part of that project - a sample layout showing all four characters.

Leica

Leica - Cuddles McGish

Following up on the previous post, here's my sequence from the leica. All sequences were put together and screened for the class, and ours turned out pretty well. I've removed the sound here, but you can see the sequence timed out.

Storyboard

Storyboard - Group Assignment

Our first big project in Storyboard this semester was a group assignment. Each group was given the same song, and each group member was assigned a specific verse for which they had to board a sequence. For this, we had to work together to come up with and agree on a story to follow the song, which included plot, character designs, and layouts, as well as ensure that each sequence flowed logically and accurately (in terms of character placement, etc) into the next. The process took a few weeks. See my boards and character designs after the break.

Character Design

Character Design - Western

Our long, semester-spanning project for layout this time concerns an 1880 western.  One of the first assignments was to create a character lineup based on the script provided. At first I went for a cartoony, stylistic look, as he assured us was perfectly acceptable. His critique was to do some more research to get more detail, so I did. He then said he wanted a realistic silhouette, at which point it became obvious that cartoony and stylistic was not acceptable. So I did one final pass with full realism.
