Character Design

Character Design - Ancient Japan

Since I've started updating the blogs twice a week, I've run into a slight problem; assignments this semester tend to be drawn out and merged with assignments from other classes. So, while I usually only post completed assignments, it's looking like I'm going to be increasingly updating with works in progress.

That said, here's an in-progress Character Design assignment. Taking an ancient culture (I chose Japan), we were required to come up with four characters: the Hero, the One They Love, the Villain, and the Comic Relief. See rotations and pose sheets after the break.

Life Drawing

Life Drawing - Year 2, Semester 2, Weeks 1-7

Here's another massive load of life drawings from the semester so far. Though I'm rarely thinking consciously about muscle structure, the studies done over the Christmas break have definitely helped. Also, we've started both tone and drapery recently, so there are a few first attempts at that in here too. See 120-odd drawings after the break!

Body Sync

Body Sync - Hot Rod

Our latest animation assignment was to take a short piece of dialogue, either of our own or pre-existing, and animate a character delivering that dialogue. It had to be human, and a full body shot. I chose a short clip from the film 'Hot Rod,' but re-imagined it as being delivered by a 1920's gangster (see previous character design post. Unfortunately I wasn't able to use the 'heavy' gangster because he just cluttered the layout). I like how it turned out.

Here's my own take on the Harlem Shake.

Character Design

Rough Character Design - 1920's

Today, here are some rough character designs I put together for an upcoming animation, which I chose to set in the 1920's. See other character sketches after the break.

3D Modelling

3D Modelling - Bob-Omb Texturing

Following up on my 3D models of the Bob-Omb and Gumby, here's the Bob-Omb textured. I realize the textures themselves are overbearing, but I was more focused on learning the workflow and trying to avoid any big discrepancies of maps lining up.

Digital Painting

Digital Painting - Exterior

One of the new classes this semester is Digital Painting, a subject I hadn't had any prior experience with. I didn't try to get too ambitious with the first assignment, but just sort of  toyed around with all the capabilities of Photoshop. In the end I came up with something I'm satisfied with as a first step. See the greyscales and alternate colour scheme after the break.

UoT Cadavers

UoT Cadaver Drawings

Two weeks ago our life drawing class took a field trip to the University of Toronto's Medical Science Building, specifically their cadaver lab. We had a short amount of time to put together some drawings of anything they had on display - brains, muscles, bones, fetuses, anything that could fit in a jar or get cut up. I feel like I should have chosen a finer medium for these drawings, but I had just gotten my pitt oil pencils and was in the height of my love affair with them.

3D Models

3D Models - Bob-Omb and Gumby

After a few small practice exercises to get to know how to model in Maya, our first real assignment was to bring in a small object, like a toy, and create a model of it. I chose to bring in small figures of a Mario Bob-Omb and Gumby. We haven't gotten into applying textures or colours yet, so they're still just grey models.
